Rifco Artistic Director Pravesh Kumar nominated for Arts, Culture & Theatre Award

25 May 2018

Rifco's Artistic Director Pravesh Kumar has been nominated for a Best Director Award (Miss Meena & the Masala Queens) at this year's Eastern Eye Arts, Culture & Theatre Awards.

The awards are an annual celebration of British Asian contribution to the arts — is pleased to announce the list of finalists ahead of the gala event next month.

The ACTAs recognise exceptional achievement within a wide range of disciplines, including literature, film, television, theatre, poetry, music, photography, dance and the visual arts.

Now in their third year, the ACTAs aim to inspire the best in the British Asian artistic community. The awards ceremony is hosted by the Asian Media Group, publishers of Eastern Eye and Garavi Gujarat newsweekly. There are 16 award categories, and the final list includes top-billed stars with critically acclaimed performances produced last year.

Amit Roy, chairman of the ACTAs judging panel and Eastern Eye editor-at-large said: “This is our third year and the wealth of nominees for the ACTAs indicate more and more young British Asians are going into the arts. An increasing number, especially in a category such as literature, are also becoming part of the mainstream. This is a heartening trend which we welcome. But there is still much more to be done. We began the ACTAs because we felt British Asian artists, try as they might, were not getting the recognition they deserved. Art, which enhances life, is for all.”

Judges on the panel include - former UK culture and digital minister Ed Vaizey MP; veteran broadcaster Prof Barnie Choudhury; creative producer at Southbank Centre Rachel Harris; Arts Council England director Abid Hussain; Asian Music Circuit CEO Viram Jasani; Akademi director Mira Kaushik OBE; literature programmer Bhavit Mehta; senior curator at V&A museum Divia Patel; founder and editor of online portal Asian Culture Vulture Sailesh Ram; artistic director at Tara Arts Jatinder Verma MBE; non-executive director of AMG, Nick Kounoupias; group managing editor at AMG Kalpesh R Solanki and executive editor at AMG Shailesh R Solanki.
